The best military transition field manual. A no-nonsense process for any transitioning military member that is based on real experiences. This audiobook is a true guide for what you need to know, not what an ACAP or TAP instructor has in their script Every military service member will experience three phases as he moves from a military career to a life outside the gate: transition, transformation, and integration. The foundation of Boots to Loafers is built upon these three concepts. They provide the structure for the advice and guidelines I want to convey to you. You may experience each of these to different degrees depending on your wishes, circumstances, goals, and surrounding environment. These three stages will vary from individual to individual, and they will be shaped by one's attitude and inner strength as well as his ability to manage the hurdles of life. From the first day you set foot into boot camp, no matter what service you have been in, until the final days of pre-deployment training exercises or redeployment, you are taught to always pay attention to every detail in every situation. Our military knows how to turn you on and get you fired up for a mission. Transitioning out of boots will require the same focus on details and the energy to get fired up for your next mission, getting a job. More than a decade of war in God knows where in the world and many of America's treasure, our young men and women, will come home and be lost when it comes to preparing for their next fight - finding a job! Many will leave the military voluntarily; more than 1.5 million will leave in the next five years. Boots gives them a helping hand, a guide: their new field manual that I never had when I retired from the US Army and entered corporate America. Let me help them find their new true north. 1. Few job titles carry the emotional charge of "salesman". And yet this widely misunderstood vocation generates more revenue for companies - and creates more opportunity for individuals - than virtually any other job. Millions of people are looking for a better way to make a living, but most would never consider becoming a salesman - even though no other job can offer the same number of available positions, income potential, schedule flexibility, or job security. Thousands of business owners are sure their fortunes could be improved, if only they could "find someone who can sell". But they have no idea how to advertise for, interview, select, hire, train, or manage productive salespeople. And most flounder when trying to sell themselves. All of these people would do well to listen to this audiobook. Originally intended as a how-to manual for career-changers considering sales, The Greatest Job You Never Thought Of has found its most receptive audience among those who already sell - or manage salespeople. Whether you are currently a salesperson, business owner, sales manager, trainer, or recruiter - or just someone considering sales as a career choice - The Greatest Job You Never Thought Of has a message for you: Why there are more positions available under the heading of Sales than any other single skill category The fundamental economic principle that explains why salespeople are able to earn more than almost anyone else in their company Why race, age, sex, education, national origin, or previous career experience have no bearing upon a person's ability to succeed in sales Exactly what is required to succeed in sales and how to develop those skills True stories of sales success in industries as divergent as industrial food service, insurance, professional audio equipment and home kitchen supplies Successful sales recruiti 1. Becoming a Food Scientist is designed as a reservoir of ideas for those beginning a graduate education in food science or beginning a professional career in the field. Although at times it may read as a how-to manual for success in graduate school, it is meant to encourage each reader to study the research process, to challenge conventional wisdom, and to develop a career path that maximizes the probability of success both in school and beyond. The author has viewed food science graduate programs through the lenses of programs at four universities and service in numerous activities with the Institute of Food Technologists. This book is thus focused on the field of food science, but it may have relevance to other scientific disciplines. The book introduces the concept of research as process in the first chapter. Subsequent chapters focus on individual unit operations of research: idea generation, problem definition, critical evaluation of the literature, method selection, experimental design, data collection, processing and analysis, and knowledge dissemination. Successful graduate students in food science must master each of these operations. The final section of the book pushes the reader beyond graduate school into its practice in the real world. Topics covered in the maturation of a food scientist include the scientific meeting, critical thinking, science and philosophy, ethics, finding and managing the literature, planning, grantsmanship, laboratory setup and management, and career development. This book should be a meaningful companion for any graduate student in the field and those transitioning from graduate school to the food science profession.
'Richmond... played a significant role in the implementation of the Helsinki accords...[His] account of how this was done is useful and peppered with interesting personal details of what it was like to be involved in the day-to-day implementation of the accords. In this respect and others, Richmond has given us an authoritative report of how public diplomacy contributed to the outcome of the Cold War.' · Journal of Cold War Studies 'The volume is a useful guide for those who are currently or expecting to be practitioners of public diplomacy and Richmond's experience, particularly in Poland and the former Soviet Union, perhaps provide the answers to how the U.S. State Department and its diplomats should confront the problems of global terrorism and anti-Americanism, especially in the Middle East. Or, as someone suggested, what really is needed is more Yale Richmonds.' · The Polish Review '[Richmond] has already contributed a great deal to the history of US public diplomacy through his earlier studies on the practice of dialogue and exchange with the Soviet Union...[and] has now compiled his memoirs into a light-hearted but nonetheless highly engaging volume...[that is] not just an entertaining chronicle of the Cold War, but also a rich source of comment on issues that continue to plague US public diplomacy today.' · Journal of American History 'Richmond's personal account of how public diplomacy was conducted during the Cold War gives the reader a practitioner's perspective on this fascinating period in our history, and underscores public diplomacy's continued importance in the conduct of U.S. foreign policy.' · USC Center on Public Diplomacy 'This short, readable volume is a treasure trove of sound advice wrapped in the recollections of one of America's leading public diplomacy practitioners and top Soviet hands whose lengthy US government career spanned 44 years.' · WhirledView 'instructive book...[is] much more enlightening about down-to-earth public diplomacy than a training manual or abstract academic treatise can ever be...a delightful volume.' · AmericanDiplomacy.org 'This book will be a long-term reference source for researchers looking at Cold War history, as the subject goes through its inevitable revisionist cycles...It documents a critical element in U.S. cold-war relations--the effort to reach out ideologically to Soviet and East European audiences in the face of formidable opposition by Communist regimes in the region. The author was involved in this subject more directly and over a longer period of time than any other U.S. government official.' · Wilson Dizard, author of Inventing Public Diplomacy, and Member of the Public Diplomacy Council 'It is sometimes said that soft power helped to win the Cold War. To find out what it was like to be on the front lines of these battles, read this fascinating memoir.' · Joseph S. Fearful Odds is a no holds barred narrative told in three parts. It is the true story of a young Army officer, groomed for command and assigned to lead a platoon on a reconnaissance mission in the A Shau Valley, Vietnam in 1968. An otherwise routine mission is complicated by the contradiction of an inept chain of command. The resulting casualties devastate the platoon and the graphic images and memories of the action and the grueling months that follow, lead Chuck Newhall to a lifetime of severe trauma, guilt, grief and anger. Returning home, Newhall embarks on an extraordinary entrepreneurial career bringing great wealth, prestige and security, despite severe episodes of depression and anxiety which would hobble others from achieving such levels of success. And yet a few years later, and seemingly without warning, the family that he had worked so hard to create and support is suddenly ripped apart by tragedy intensifying an emotional upheaval that revisits the pain and anguish he first felt during his time in Vietnam. After decades of experience in managing the long-term effects of trauma and with the support of his family, Chuck Newhall has successfully come to terms with his past and the effects of PTSD. Fearful Odds offers hope, inspiration and valuable coping tools for anyone, or their families, who has been affected by post-traumatic stress, depression, mild traumatic brain disorder or the suicide of a loved one. Fearful Odds is a story of perseverance in the face of insurmountable odds and will offer a guiding hand to others who are facing challenges on the battlefield, boardroom or back at home. 'Chuck Newhall's compelling narrative account of combat action in Vietnam takes you to one of the darkest hellholes on earth -- the A Shau Valley in 1968. Just when you thought that the war was over, Fearful Odds packs a punch in the gut you will be feeling for a long time.' Joseph L. Galloway, author of We Were Soldiers Once...and Young 'If you care about America's warriors, and about how we as a society can help them come home after war, then you should read this book.' Nathaniel Fick, author of One Bullet Away 'The illuminating depictions of sessions with your phychiatrist Dr. Kaiser can be regarded as almost a manual for understanding PTSD and learning how to overcome it. However, unlike the majority of books on the subject, you explain how PTSD can be addressed via depictions of how your own efforts have succeeded to varying extents. Readers will learn far more from your book, which is 'real life,' than from others.' Solomon H. Snyder, M.D. Distinguished Service Professor of Neuroscience, Pharmacology and Psychiatry, Johns Hopkins University 'Everyone knows someone who came back from Vietnam and never talks about it. In his brave and unflinching memoir, Chuck Newhall talks about it like no one else ever has. We see combat and its consequences, exploding years later like emotional time bombs when people are safely at home. This is a unique book, written in the ground-level tradition of Paul Casey and Timothy O'Brien but all its own about the war that never ends in real lives. This is the best book I have read about Vietnam as it was lived and as it still plays out in the lives of real people.' Landon Y. (Lanny) Jones, former managing editor People and Money magazines and the author of William Clark and the Shaping of the West 'Grabs you with the opening words and never lets go. Powerful and compelling.' Steve Huntley, former Editor and Columnist Chicago Sun Times
